LES MS. AND FRIENDS SING FOR CARE

History of the Event

In 2005, Les Ms. spearheaded a fundraising concert of inspiring choral music by singers who care, in support of those who need care. Now entering its fourth year, the event has successfully raised over $30,000 though the generous participation of many local personalities and choirs including Krysta Rudofsky, Francesca Swann, Shelly Neville, Holy Heart Alumnae Choir, Lady Cove, and Newfound Sound. Most recently the event has grown to include two concerts and featured friends from previous concerts as well as Newman Sound, Ron Hutton and Heather Bambrick.

Originally offered in partnership with the CIBC Run For the Cure to raise money for breast cancer research, all concert proceeds are now used to support the Patient and Family Support Fund of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation right here in Newfoundland and Labrador. This fund assists patients and their families who are experiencing financial hardship as a result of cancer diagnoses.

Newfoundland and Labrador is very geographically dispersed and patients must often travel long distances from rural and remote regions to St. John's in order to get the treatment they need. Travel, accommodation and meal costs can add up very quickly, while patient are receiving treatment away from home. In just one year, from April 2005 to March off 2006, the Patient and Family Support Fund received 325 requests from patients requiring treatment for cancer and disbursed nearly $68,000 to help defray travel and accommodations expenses. Les Ms. and Friends Sing For Care Annual Benefit Concert supports this worthy cause. As one patient expressed, "Knowing there are people who understand, made the burden lighter". And that is truly something to sing about!

Sing for Care 2009 will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25 at Cochrane Street United Church at 2:00 and 7:30 pm. Please join us in our continued efforts to support those who need care.
